SiMPore of Henrietta, NY, wins $100k at the Golden Horseshoe competition
Released: May 15, 2008

ITHACA, NY -- A business plan presented by SiMPore Inc. on May 14 to a panel of venture capitalist judges won the second annual Golden Horseshoe Business Challenge. The Henrietta nanotechnology company won $100,000. SiMPore qualified last week for the Golden Horseshoe competition by winning the Rochester Regional Business Plan contest, which carried a $25,000 prize. SiMPore's business is based on technology developed at the University of Rochester. The company's filters are designed to screen out materials as small as viruses or proteins, This year's Golden Horseshoe featured such companies as GeneWeave, an Ithaca company trying to commercialize technology that would quickly and cheaply test for the presence of drug-resistant bacteria, and SensiVida Medical Systems Inc. of Canandaigua, which makes minimally invasive medical diagnostic devices. The other two finalists were Clinical Insight Systems Inc. in Perinton, which produces electronic medical record software, and SweetWater Ethanol LLC, a Rush company with a process to produce a fermentable concentrate that lowers the cost of making ethanol.
